2nd of November- Day of the dead 2014: Altar in Casa Migrante, Amsterdam.

Mexico traditionally starts celebrating the day of the dead at the end of October. In this celebration, Mexicans reflect on the concept of death and the value of life. Each house, each square, town, neighbourhood, school and city honors the visit of their dead, as we wait for them to come back to us once more. For that purpose we build an altar with flowers, music, pain and joy for them to come
back to, eat and rejoice in their celebration. This is how we celebrate and welcome our beloved that were once with us.

The group of Mexicans in the Netherlands for peace in Mexico take this opportunity to remember our dead and speak about peace, love and justice for them and their families.  This year we want to honor all the students assassinated during 1968 and 2014 by the authorities. We want to honor the right of demonstration and let them know that we have not forgotten them.

Donation fee 3 Euros, includes a small Mexican snack (cup of 'ponche', rice, black beans and 1 'enchilada').

*Non-profit Event. The donation fee is in support to the families of the students murdered and dissapeared of the Escuela Normal Rural Raúl Isidro Burgos in Ayotzinapa.

Each house, each square, town, neighbourhood, school and city honors the visit of their dead, as we wait for them to come back to us once more. For that purpose we build an altar with flowers, music, pain and joy for them to come

back to, eat and rejoice in their celebration. This is how we celebrate and welcome our beloved that were once with us.

The group of Mexicans in the Netherlands for peace in Mexico take this opportunity to remember our dead and speak about peace, love and justice for them and their families. This year we want to honor the 72 journalist who have died in México during the past six years. We want to honor their work and let them know we have not forgotten them.

Let's name the dead so everyone knows they once lived here and that we hold a big "debt of peace and justice owed to them and ourselves, so the whole of Mexico knows that no citizen will ever again allow a political project to be built on hate, corruption, impunity, war and death" (Sicilia 2011).

Ofrenda a nuestros 50,000 muertos

"Sólo le pido a Dios, que la guerra no me sea indiferente, es un monstruo grande y pisa fuerte toda la pobre inocencia de la gente."

Sonaba la voz de Mercedes Sosa mientras mis compañeros y yo preparábamos todo para la ofrenda en honor a nuestros 50,000 muertos en Casa Migrante, Amsterdam. Dedicamos la ofrenda a todas esas personas con un nombre, una identidad y un rostro que fueron víctimas de la violencia achacada a la lucha que sostiene el gobierno contra el crimen organizado. Rendimos tributo a todos ellos, que ya no están con nosotros, pero que nos recuerdan con su memoria la importancia y urgencia de no cesar exigiendo la paz y la justicia.

Una semana antes nos habíamos reunido para pulir los detalles del evento. Queríamos que todo saliera perfecto. Hablamos de los pendientes y el programa. Al salir de allí me quedé pensando en lo ambiguo que es “trabajar por la paz” o “luchar por ella”. Nos enfrentamos a un monstruo muy grande, muy violento. Solos no podremos contra él.

Vuelvo al día de nuestro evento. La voz de Mercedes Sosa me acompañaba en la mente mientras registraba a los asistentes. El programa comenzó a tiempo. Poco a poco comenzaron a llegar más y más personas. Muchos interesados en conocer más sobre la tradición del día de muertos, otros interesados en la paz y la justicia de México.

Fue una tarde muy emotiva tanto para nosotros como para los asistentes. Recordamos a nuestros 50,000 muertos. Hicimos visible su memoria y lo seguiremos haciendo.

Mientras veía a los mexicanos y holandeses allí reunidos, pensé que tal vez no podamos cortar la cabeza del monstruo de un solo golpe, pero sí que podemos comenzar por dañar su maligno y corrupto cuerpo. Por lo menos podemos llegar a más voces y entre todos, después golpearlo más duro hasta, algún día, derribarlo. Estoy completamente segura de que esa tarde las voces de las víctimas fueron escuchadas; nos fuimos con esa satisfacción a casa.

Extiendo un agradecimiento a Casa Migrante Amsterdam, sus colaboradores y a los familiares y amigos que nos ayudaron a organizar este evento.

Personalmente, agradezco a mis compañeros por no ser indiferentes a la guerra, a las muertes y a la violencia; por ser una fuente de inspiración y valentía cuando el monstruo me asusta; por dedicar su amor y tiempo a la causa que nos une: la paz en México.

“Si un traidor puede más que unos cuantos, que esos cuantos no lo olviden fácilmente”.

Gracias a todos por no olvidar fácilmente.
